Right now, you're standing in front of one of the most important architectural pearls in our city, in front of Wortner's house. It's a building that carries a layer of centuries and tells a story about city changes, the ambitions of rich townspeople and the love of art. Look at the overall shape of the building. The first impression is monumental, but at the same time you feel a kind of harmony that is typical of a period when medieval rigour began to intersect with new, humanistic optimism.

In order to understand what you see, we have to go back to the past in our minds. This house has not been one big total since the beginning. Imagine there once were two separate, smaller Gothic houses in this place. They were typical urban buildings of their time, narrow and functional. But changes began to happen in the first half of the 16th century. It is interesting that up to five hundred and six years ago this part of the building was used by the Jewish community, which tells us how diverse and cosmopolitan Czech Budejovice were at that time. Later, these two smaller houses were united into one larger townhouse, which was at that time a clear signal of wealth and the social rise of owners.

Now please look up. Your view will attract the upper part of the facade, which dominates the whole house. Notice the tall, impressive atics. Atika is basically a brick wall that covers the roof and serves as a decorative end of the building. In this case, it is decorated with Renaissance battlements and decorative bastions. These elements, which resemble the castle's wall end, give the house a proud and noble look. This form is the result of a major reconstruction which took place in the years of tyres of five hundred fifty-eight to those of five hundred fifty-nine. For this transformation, Jan Kelbl, the man who brought the elements of the late Renaissance into the house and made it a true palace. When you look at these details, remember that in the 16th century such a facade was a symbol of modernity and taste.

In addition to the mentioned John Kelble, who gave the house its present face, the Wortner family is inextricably connected to the site. This family became the owner of the property in a thousand eight hundred and sixty. The Wortners were not just ordinary owners of the house, they were people educated, possessed and deeply bound to develop culture and education in the region. They made the house a place where the intellectual elite met and art was cultivated. It's fascinating to think about how the house evolved from gothic houses through the Renaissance mansion to the family home of enlightened townspeople. In connection with the history of this place and its surroundings, the name Jan Žižka of Trocnova appears, which reminds us that the building stands in a place where the fates of great historical figures and the fundamental events of our history intersect.

If you enter, pay attention to the ceilings. There you will see beautiful nail vaults that are typical of Gothic architecture and give the spaces a sense of lightness and grandeur. There are rich stucco elements that complement the Renaissance character of the building. It's a space where stone and plaster turn into a work of art. The house currently performs its most important role as an important cultural space. Since the year one thousand nine hundred ninety-two, the building has been part of Alš's South Bohemian Gallery, which is a beautiful ending to its development. The house, which was once a private residence, now belongs to everyone and serves to present the beauty of fine art.

Perhaps now you might wonder what the biggest secret of this house is. It's in his ability to adapt to the times without losing his identity. It is a fascinating process, as two small Gothic buildings gradually merged and transformed into one large Renaissance object that survived centuries, wars and regime changes. It's a story about continuity. If you look again at the decorative bastion on the attics, try to imagine how people looked at the same details four years ago. They saw in them the same beauty and strength we see today.
