The railway bridge in Bernartice in Trutnovsk is an important technical monument from 1868. The building on the track from Trutnov to Královka is bridged by the road and the river Lická at 29,04 metres. It provides evidence of the development of railway infrastructure in the foothills of Giant Mountains in the second half of the 19th century.

The bridge was built in the 1960s when intensive construction of the railway network took place in Czech countries. Austria-Hungary then invested in connecting industrial centres such as Trutnov with the surrounding regions. The construction was implemented by bratři Kleinové from Sobotín ironworks.

The architectural solution combines the wall floor and steel supporting structure. The foundation consists of high supporting pillars made of sandstone blocks with thick oblique wings. Below the iron part is the lower bridge floor with two combined valented segment arches. These arches are lined up from a block wall and reach a height of seven meters above the road level. Above the vaults is a tower with a horizontal profiled concrete ledge of approximately 22 metres long. The roman, supplemented by columns and railing, is primarily a spacing function for high loading.

The original supporting structure was composed of a trench sheathed Schifkorn beam with upper bridge, technically identical to the bridge in Poříčí near Trutnov. In 1871 it was replaced by a riveted beam of welded steel. Another fundamental change took place in 1941, when a full-bodied riveted beam was installed, which is still on the front of the pillars today. This element measures 27 metres, with a total bridge length of 38,5 metres.

In 2015 the construction went through maintenance and new paint. The building is currently registered as a cultural monument.

This bridge is a valuable testament to 19th century engineering and the development of railway transport in the region. Visitors of Bernartic near Trutnova can see this technical monument near local railway stops.

Welcome to the railway bridge in Bernartice, a unique technical monument that proudly shuts down over the road and the river Lickou. You are standing in front of an impressive construction with smooth surfaces of steel and hard sandstone base, which are connected in a harmonious architectural solution. Take a look up at the high supporting pillars of sandstone blocks, which fasten this structure and the bent height 29.04 meters above ground level. Notice how history is projected to date through these materials, which have been selected for their resistance and aesthetic value.

Let's move on to the beginnings of this bridge. In 1868 his construction was completed as part of the railway line connecting Trutnov and Králové. This project represented technological progress at the time when more modern materials like steel for railway infrastructure were beginning to be used. The construction was realized by bratři Kleinové from Sobotín ironworks, bringing their technical miracle to the site.

Now pay attention to the architecture of this bridge. The construction combines the wall floor of sandstone blocks with the steel bearing structure that you see before you. The original platform beam of the Schifkorn system has been replaced over the years by more modern steel structures. In 1871, the original structure was in exchange for a riveted beam of welder steel, which was a very advanced step for that time. Later, in 1941, further modernization was carried out by installing a full riveted beam.

The interesting thing about this place is the connection to the historical personality of the Klein brothers. These engineers not only contributed to the construction of the bridge, but also influenced its technology and design. Their work here is a testament to their skills and vision.

Let's look at something that might be a mystery to you: this monument bridged the time span from the 19th century to the present day with a series of maintenance and modernization works that have maintained its functionality and aesthetic value. New dyeing of the bridge structure was carried out in 2015, which ensures its protection against damage caused by weather effects.

In conclusion, železniční most v Bernarticích is a real pearl of architecture and technology. I hope you learned a lot about this monument during this guide. If you have time, explore the surrounding landscape and other historical sites in the region of Bernartice. Now enjoy your visiting day! Thank you for your attention and I hope you'll come back again.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during the morning or late afternoon when the sun illuminates the technical details of the bridge structure and creates interesting shadows. The site is freely accessible throughout the year, but we recommend a visit in dry weather for safe movement in the surrounding terrain. For photography we recommend to choose the angle from the ceiling of the Líčná stream, from which the thickness of stone supports and steel structures will be best excelled. Take with you fixed shoes suitable for outdoor movement around the creek and a wide-angle camera.
