Bechyňská brána in Tábor presents a unique witness to the medieval fortification system of the city. It is the only original gates of the city fortification that has been preserved to this day. The gate forms an integral part of the castle complex Kotnov and both objects are protected together as a national cultural monument.

Today's form was acquired by the gate in the 1930s, when it was substantially rebuilt. It was originally a simple square tower. During the 1930s, a new extension was added to the old tower, which was already specifically designed for modern defence - artillery defence. This extension filled the space between the original tower and the park wall of the neighbouring castle of Kotnov, thus creating a stronger and more functional defensive complex. The passage of the gate was at the same time equipped with a flagship drawbridge, which enabled control and, in the event of a threat, access to the city.

In the 19th century the gate underwent extensive reconstruction according to the design of architect Josef Mocker. This reconstruction partially changed its original appearance, although the basic structure remained.

The building is a two storey building with an unusual floor plan in the shape of a trapezoid. The passage is encapsulated by a vaulted arch supplemented by lunettes and its characteristic square is two-fold thick portals that open it. The passage doesn't lead to an interesting axis of the building, but it's moved to its northwest side. On the outside of the gate, there was still an intrusion, which remained on the drawbridge, and two narrow openings designed for levers called flagstones, which were used to lift the bridge. On the first floor on the inside there is a raked pavry from a later period - from the 19th century.

The gate is a typical example of how medieval fortifications had to adapt to the new requirements of military technology. Its visit offers insight into the practical solutions made up by medieval city defence builders and reminds of the time when Tábor represented an important military and defence point in Czech countries.
