kaple svatého Kříže (Markvartice) Chapel
The chapel of the Holy Cross is one of the interesting witnesses of Baroque construction in the second half of the 18th century in the Czech landscape. Located in the cemetery of the village Markvartice next to the church of St. Martin, it served as a place of prayer and sermon for believers until it gradually fell into oblivion. Today it is protected together with the Church of St. Martin as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic - a testimony about the value of its architectural heritage, even if it has been preserved only in part.
The Baroque form of the chapel was simple but distinctive. The construction had a rectangular plan and three-axis main facade, decorated with pilasters and a characteristic wing shield with triangular attachment. The axis of the facade was highlighted by a semi-circular end of the portal and an oval window placed above. In the shield there was a niche with a statue of St. Mary Magdalene, which gave a chapel of spiritual character. The sides of the facade were deliberately gouged, creating a plastic shadow game, decorated by rectangular windows with a semicircle.
The interior of the chapel was equipped in the spirit of the Baroque with elements of the top 18th century. The ceiling decorated the fabion - a characteristic decorative element of Baroque architecture. The wall paintings from the end of the 18th century brought figural elements with classical motifs to the interior that signal the transition from late Baroque to a new style. The main altar consisted of an illusory wall painting depicting the Virgin Mary and Saint John with the central figure of Christ on the cross. The wooden body of this flowing figure comes from the second half of the 18th century and represents a quality craftsmanship work of the time.
Today, the chapel of the Holy Cross is preserved only in a torsion form - the building is mainly left with the eastern front wall. The remnants of the chapel, which was once the intellectual and architectural enrichment of the local cemetery, now resemble the vulnerability of cultural heritage and its dependence on care and attention. Yet they deserve the attention of those who are interested in baroque construction and its transformation. Visiting this humble place allows you to understand how the historical taste of the 18th century has always and everywhere managed to leave visible clues - even where only a fragment has survived from the extensive work.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Markvarticích is today an almost disappeared Baroque building from the second half of the eighteenth century. It stands on the local cemetery next to the Church of Saint Martin. Only its eastern façade wall has been preserved. Together with the church, it is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The chapel had a rectangular ground plan. The main façade was three-axed and divided by pilasters. At the top it was crowned with a winged gable with a triangular superstructure. In the central axis there was a portal topped with a semicircle and above it an oval window. In the gable was a niche with a statue of Saint Mary Magdalene. The side parts of the façade are fluted. In the side walls of the chapel were rectangular windows, also topped with semicircles at the top.
The interior was covered with a coffered ceiling, that is with a rounded transition to the walls. It was decorated with figurative wall painting from the end of the eighteenth century with Classical motifs. The main altar was not formed by an actual altarpiece structure, but by an illusory wall painting. It depicted the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Between them was placed a wooden corpus of Christ on the cross, also from the second half of the eighteenth century.
Tips for visitors
Best time to visit the chapel of the Holy Cross is in spring or autumn when the weather is pleasant and surrounding nature is in full glory. In summer the cemetery can be quite hot and the sun can be too strong, while in winter access can be limited due to snow or ice. The chapel is ideal for visiting in a quiet morning or afternoon when there are fewer tourists and you can see the ruins in peace.
The chapel is located in the village Markvartice, so the easiest way to get here is by car. Check the current connections and routes in the traffic search engine. It is also possible to use bicycle transport in the surroundings as the surroundings are suitable for cycling.
When visiting the chapel, wear comfortable clothes and shoes because the terrain in the cemetery can be uneven. I also recommend taking a map or navigation with you, because the chapel is located in a smaller cemetery and can be difficult to find. If you want to take photos, bring a good camera or smartphone with a high-quality lens. The best light for photography is in the morning or afternoon when the sun is not too strong.
For photography are the most suitable places around the chapel where its historical character and surrounding nature are well captured. Particularly interesting are the views of the ruins of the chapel from different angles, for example from around St. Martin's Church. It is also appropriate to capture the contrast between old architecture and surrounding nature, such as forests and fields. If you want to take quality pictures, avoid shooting directly at bright noon sun.
Around the chapel of the Holy Cross there are several interesting places worth visiting. I especially recommend visiting the city of Děčín, which is located about half an hour drive from Markartic. In Děčín you can visit the historical centre with numerous monuments and also the castle Děčín, which is one of the most important tourist attractions in the region. The chateau offers rich history and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
If you visit the Holy Cross Chapel with children, you can offer them an interesting walk through the cemetery and surrounding forests. Children can see the old tombstones and historical stones that are part of the cemetery. In the vicinity of the chapel it is also possible to find interesting natural elements such as old trees or small streams. It may also be interesting for children to visit the castle Děčín, where it is possible to learn about history and adventure.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring the chapel comes alive thanks to the awakening nature and fresh green, which slowly covers stone walls. The atmosphere is full of hope and fine light of the morning clock, which softens the appearance of the ruins. We recommend moisture-resistant shoes because the surrounding roads can be muddy after melting snow. An ideal visit in the morning is when the air is the cleanest.
The summer season brings intense sun and deep shadows in the ruins, creating dramatic visual contrast. Around the monument there is a dense vegetation that provides natural shade. Due to the increased attendance in the high season, come early in the morning to enjoy the place in peace and cool. Don't forget light clothes and plenty of fluids.
Autumn is the most poetic period for this memory, when the colored leaves and morning mist underline the melancholy of the place. The golden light of the afternoon sun will highlight the texture of the old stone and the detail of the ruins. Due to the variable weather, select layered clothes and plan your journey to late afternoon for the best lighting conditions.
In winter, the chapel works in a very strong and quiet way, especially if the walls are covered with snow. The contrast of the white landscape and the grey stone gives the monument a mystical and peaceful touch. It is necessary to have warm and waterproof clothing and fixed footwear with an anti-slip sample. Due to the short days we recommend a visit in the morning.
