Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie (Úžice) Church

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Úžice is a historically significant Romanesque filial church located on a cemetery near the main road in the village of Úžice, within the Kutná Hora district of Středočeský kraj. Originally constructed in the first quarter of the 13th century, this church has undergone several architectural transformations over the centuries, reflecting its enduring religious and cultural importance in the region. Its long-standing role as a place of worship is underscored by its association with the Sázava parish.

The origins of Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie trace back to the early 13th century when it was built in Romanesque style, although some sources suggest construction may have begun as early as the 12th century. The church's historical significance is highlighted by its first documented mention in 1352 as a parish church under the Kouřim deanery. Over time, ownership and administrative control saw notable changes, particularly during the Hussite Wars when the church lost its parish status and became a filial church managed from Rataje. A dispute over patronage rights between Diviš of Talmberk and King Wenceslaus IV in 1404 further illustrates the complex historical dynamics surrounding this site.

Architecturally, the church began as a modest Romanesque structure featuring a square tower and possibly an apsidal east end. Over centuries, it underwent significant transformations: the nave was expanded southward during Gothic renovations, and a presbytery was added in the 15th century. The Baroque period saw further modifications with the addition of a sacristy and the heightening of the belfry, which now features a lantern with a lucerne. Notably, purist renovations between 1906 and 1909 altered its appearance by removing plaster from facades and changing window tracery.

Throughout its history, Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie has been under various administrative controls. Initially part of the Sázava parish, it became a filial church managed from Rataje after the Hussite Wars. In 1631, the church was first recorded as being dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, and by 1787, a local chapel (lokálie) was established in Úžice. The parish status was reinstated in 1854, and since 2009, it has been administered from the Sázava-Černé Budy parish.

Today, Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie stands as a testament to its rich historical tapestry, with regular services held on the third Saturday of each month. The church's architectural evolution is evident in its blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic elements. Visitors can appreciate the figurative decorations on the ribbed vaults' capitals, some of which are modern reproductions, as well as a Neo-Gothic main altar from 1910. The church's historical artifacts include a Rococo baptismal font, a statue of the Virgin Mary from the late 17th century, and an image of Saint John Nepomuk from the mid-18th century.
