More than a hundred years ago, precisely in 1903, there began to be events that had a major impact on transport in our countries. At that time, our country belonged to a vast Austrian-Hungary and the ambitions of the time were huge. Building a lateral navigation channel Mělník-Vranians was not only a local task, but part of a spectacular plan to improve connections and trade. The wall in Hořín was at that time considered one of the most ambitious and technically demanding projects of the entire empire. It was built between 1903 and 1905 and its main purpose was to solve a fundamental problem: how to let ships safely overcome the slope of the Vltava, which is 8,5 metres high. Imagine the challenge - build a stable and reliable system that can fly heavy ships a few meters higher or below without losing control of the water surface.

Now pay attention to the very structure that surrounds you. Although it may seem to you that it's just concrete and steel, you're actually looking at a masterpiece of engineering. The whole was designed by an important architect and engineer František Sander. It was his vision and technical knowledge that allowed this work to be created in such difficult conditions. If you look at the structure of the lock, notice that it is not made up of just one part. At the heart of the whole system are two lock locks which have different dimensions to accommodate different types of vessels. One of them is large, measures 137 meters in length and 20 meters in width, while the other is smaller, with dimensions of 73 meters in length and 11 meters in width. This diversity was key to the efficiency of the entire route. Feel the geometry, the precision that must be maintained, so that the water remains under control and that each vessel can move smoothly from one level to another.

Even though the names of the particular workers or figures who built this work may have been lost in history, their work here is evident in every detail. Even if its output is only 30 kilowatts, it's a beautiful example of how people could use the natural movement of water to produce energy. This power plant uses the potential of water that flows here due to the fall and turns it into electricity. It is a small but significant symbol of sustainability that links the centuries past to the present ones.

Engineers and workers focused mainly on modernising the lifting mechanism. This means that although at first glance you seem to be looking at something old, inside is a modern technology that ensures that the lock will serve safely for many more years. It's a fascinating combination of old craft and modern machines.
