Bohumín Railway station

The Bohumín railway station at Adam Mickiewicza 67 started in May 1847. The first train entered from Moravian Ostrava on May 1, when the last part of the North railway line of Emperor Ferdinand (SDCF) from Lipník was completed. The railway station was deliberately built outside the historic city of Bohumín on swampy terrain in the grounds sold by SDCF Countess Roudnická. This intention was provoked by resistance - Priest Josef Plasuň of Vienna opposed the construction outside the parish grounds.

In the early days, traffic was simple. The station had one transport track, several warehouse, workshop and other operating tracks. The whole place was surrounded by a fence, and trains were coming through the big doors. The situation changed over time - in 1848 the Post Office added, in 1849 the telegraph and train mail Vienna-Bohumín started in 1850. In 1855, the station received another extension of three buildings.

The connection with Prussia was opened in 1848. The first train took off on September 1st, but the passengers only reached the Odra River - there they switched on the spring and on the other side they boarded the ready train. The permanent bridge over Odra was opened on September 3, 1849. This bridge survived the Prussian occupation - soldiers destroyed it in 1866, but in 1867 it was restored. Since 1867, Košicko-Zamín railway (KBD) was built alongside SDCF with its own station and operating facilities. Later, both companies agreed to share the SDCF's shipping structure.

The transport building was designed by the engineer Karl Hummel and was built in 1847. The building had two perpendicular four-axis wings, ground floor and shelter along the station. From 1868 to 1870 it was rebuilt by architect Theodor Hoffman - it was converted to saddle roofs. The largest transformation came in 1901 to 1904 when the building was extended to the north side and received a symmetrical form with a representative vestibule in the central part. Architect Eduard Kramer combined Art Nouveau elements with original architecture. In the course of the twentieth century the station went through several renovations - in 1994- 1995 it was returned to the state of 1904, in 2017- 2018 the roof and door were replaced and the new colour was restored, in 2020- 2021 there was extensive reconstruction for 63 million crowns focused on windows, doors, façade, heating and a new mobility.

The station also solved practical problems. From the beginning, there was no water - imported in barrels. Therefore, in 1847 the first water plant was built according to the design of Karl Hummel. It was a storey house with a waterworks in its axis and tie on its sides. Over time, the water ducts - from Zábátí (1872), from Skřežona (1894) and from the Odra River (1913) were added. In 1905, KBD built an iron concrete watercourse in the locomotive depot with a cylindrical tank in a concrete casing decorated with arc atics. In the 1930s to 1940s he joined another unique water station.

SDCF built complex residential houses and barracks for its employees. The oldest type house (no. 135) dates back to 1870 - it is a two-story plastered house with side rizality. A two-storey service house from a concrete masonry (type project No 160, No 384) has also been preserved and its mirror duplication is seen in houses No 297 and 239 on Railway Street.

The Bohumín station remains one of the most important railway nodes in the region. Its buildings tell about the development of the railway - from the first years with a temporary bridge through Odra to the Art Nouveau architecture, which preserved its shape after more than 120 years. For the visitor there is wealth of history and technology wrapped in every stone.
