Budějovická brána Gate

Budějovická brána is one of the four original gates of the Třeboň city fortification and is located on the western edge of the historical core, at the end of Hus Street. Her story is closely linked to the lock and gradual changes in urban communication.

The gate was originally known as Nová Sřilická and in the 16th century it served as a link between today's Masaryk Square and the castle park, which led the road to České Budějovice and Prague. With the changing needs of urban life, the road traffic has changed and the transit has become mainly intended for pedestrian transport. From this original building, only the arched staircase has been preserved until today.

The fundamental change occurred at the beginning of the 17th century when the builder Dominik Cometta from Eckthorn, between 1605 and 1610, rebuilt the gate into its current form. This reconstruction was part of an extensive construction project - A long castle corridor leading through the city walls, which connected the castle not only with the gate but also with the Church of the Virgin Mary Queen and Saint Jilje. It was an ambitious solution creating a comprehensive network of communications between the most important urban objects.

Architecturally, the gate is characterized by a central portal with an edge that separates the passage from the sgraffiti wall of the lock. On both sides of the main road road, the gate has special arched passageways for pedestrians, connecting the Sokolská Class to Husova Street and leading to the Dean's temple with the Augustinian monastery. Its current form was modified in 1824 due to communication requirements.

During the 20th century, the gate went through other modifications. In 1903 one of the arched passages was created, which required the cancellation of the original staircase. The second pedestrian passage was subsequently torn apart in 1935. These changes reflect the gradual adaptation of the gate to the changing requirements of urban traffic.

Budějovická brána is one of the four preserved main gates of the Třeboňské fortification - next to it there are also Hradec Gate, Svinen Gate and Novohradská Gate. For the visitor Třeboň he represents an interesting stop with his rich history and architectural interest, which shows complex relationships between the castle, the city and its communication infrastructure.
