Měšťanský pivovar in Polné is a historic industrial complex in historism, which was built between 1863 and 1865 on the interface of Komenský and Viktorin Street. This cultural monument is reminiscent of the tradition of brewing beer dating back to 1442 and is today undergoing extensive renewal.

The history of mocha cooking in the city dates back to 1442, when the then master Hynce Ptáček z Pirkštejna granted the village a war law. At that time there were three operations in Polná, namely the upper town, the lower and the manor castle. In the 1960s, the Czech countries were in a period of intense industrial development and strengthening the national economy within the Austrian Empire, which led to the construction of new industrial buildings. When the previous upper brewery burned down in August 1863, law-abiding townspeople built a new building on its burning grounds between 1863 and 1865.

This complex was built in 1863- 1865. The building development continued in 1884 by building corresponding lager cellars and in 1905 by modernising the whole complex. Further modifications took place in 1928 in connection with the establishment of the malting plant. Since 2001, the whole property has undergone extensive historical reconstruction.

The building belonged to local city lawyers. In 1927, Mayor Polné and owner of the Pan Brewery sold his stagnant business to the Urban Brewery. After nationalisation by the State on 1 January 1948, the operation worked only until 1950 when beer production was stopped. Subsequently, the premises were used for 20 years to produce sodas and then as warehouses for Fruit and Vegetables. Since 2001 he has acquired a new private owner.

The old Upper Brewery burned down in 1863 and the construction of the new complex began. In 1905 a total reconstruction took place and in 1928 a malting plant was established. The important interesting thing is that in the years 1917-1919 he lived in these places with his parents the future important Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. Beer production was definitely stopped in 1950.

Since 2001, when the site acquired a new owner, its extensive reconstruction takes place and was declared a cultural monument in the same year. This building represents a valuable example of historical industrial construction and its visit offers a view of the history of brewing, associated with the important personalities of Czech history.

Welcome to Polna. Right now, you are standing in front of the vast area of the former town brewery, which is located at the interface of Komensky and victorin. Slow down your step, look around you and let the atmosphere of the place where history has been formed for centuries. Before you, there is a landmark that has passed through fated fates, from great fires to a new rescue.

Let's go back in time to fifteen hundred forty-two, or fourteen hundred forty-two, when it all began. At that time, the Polen Lord Hynce Ptáček z Pirkštejna granted the city of Polná a rare right of war. This laid firm foundations for the tradition of brewing beer, which had deep roots here. The so-called Upper Brewery used to stand in these places. But fate was not in his favour and burned. But the city lawyers didn't give up. On the burning ground of this burnt-out brewery, they built a new, more modern industrial complex in the years one thousand eight hundred sixty-three to one thousand eight hundred sixty-five.

Now look straight ahead at the buildings that make up this complex built in the spirit of history. Pay attention to the overall layout of the facade and the proportions of the building, which reflects the construction of the nineteenth century. Over the centuries, the site developed and responded to the times. A significant milestone was the year of the thousand and nine hundred and five, when the whole brewery complex was renovated and modernized. The building development also included the construction of deep lager cellars and the establishment of a malting plant, which served to ensure the quality of production of golden fluid.

Strong stories and interesting personalities are linked to this place. The first one is already mentioned Hynce Ptáček z Pirkštejna, a nobleman who gave the whole city a warning privilege. Later centuries brought to the brewery the excitement associated with hardworking townspeople and brews. Although the industrial production of beer in these places during the twentieth century, namely in the year one thousand nine hundred forty-eight, was nationalized and finally finished, the story of the brewery did not end there.

Now pay attention to one extremely interesting chapter that links the Polish brewery to the Czech literary classic. Between a thousand and nine hundred seventeen and a thousand and nine hundred nineteen lived in these places with his parents little Bohumil Hrabal. Yes, you read correctly, the famous writer spent part of his childhood right here in the environment of the Polen brewery. This atmosphere was later strongly described in its creation, full of distinctive characters, the smell of malt, yeasts and brewing.

A long decade after production and a thousand nine hundred forty eight years after the site was nationalized, the brewery began to disintegrate. But the break came in two hundred and one. In this year he acquired the entire premises of the new owner, was officially declared a cultural monument and began his extensive and demanding reconstruction, which saved him from extinction.

Take another look at the massive walls and the thoughtful structure of the buildings that are now alive again. Thank you for listening to our story about the town brewery in Polná. I hope you enjoyed your walk through history, I wish you a beautiful rest of the day and a happy journey on your next discovery of the beauty of this city. Goodbye.

Themed route

Měšťanský pivovar in the municipality Polná

1.Měšťanský pivovar Type: Historical brewery Why is it worth a visit: This main objective represents an important industrial monument with a rich tradition of brewing beer in the region. It offers a view into the history of the local brewery and architecture associated with this craft.

Since no other places in the area were listed in the entry, this cruise route is aimed exclusively at the tour of the Urban Brewery itself and its immediate premises in Polné, thus ensuring compliance with all established rules without the use of the intended objectives.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings awakening nature around Polna, where sun rays gradually reveal the raw beauty of the industrial architecture of the Urban Brewery. The light is sharp and bright, ideal for a detailed view of the old brick walls and the ongoing building modifications that give the whole complex a raw character. There is a calm atmosphere in this period, as the main tourist burden is yet to come. Since the area is being renovated, it is necessary to count on a colder draught in open spaces, so take the fixed shoes to the building terrain and windpipe. The best time to visit is in the morning when the sun shines on the front of the building and the air is fresh.

Summer opens the main visiting season, where lush greenery spread around the brewery and sunlight penetrates deep into open yards. The atmosphere is alive, the air smells of hot wood and building dust, which underlines the authenticity of the site. Right now, we need to be able to be patient, because more people are coming on holiday weekends. The practical advice is to leave early in the morning after opening to avoid the heat of the noon and the biggest crowds. Put on light, breathable clothes, but do not forget the fixed shoes, which, due to the ongoing work, is still mandatory equipment for every step.

Autumn covers the area of the town brewery in melancholy mood, which is drawn by falling leaves and a foggy wound. The lighting is silenced, often gilding, which gives the old industrial buildings an extremely photogenic patina. Visitors are losing ground, so you can enjoy a tour of the exteriors in complete focus and silence. Because weather is usually fickle and temperatures are falling, the necessity is layered clothing, waterproof jacket and warm socks. The ideal time for arrival is around noon, when fog usually dissolves and daily temperatures reach their daily maximum.

Winter turns Polna into a quiet, snow-dusted kingdom, where the mighty walls of the brewery stand as a silent witness to the old times. The atmosphere is extremely chamber and mysterious, supported by earlier dimming and cold air. In advent time and during winter months the opening hours are adapted to a short day, so check the deadline in advance. The tour takes place in cold conditions because the objects in the reconstruction are not heated, so it is necessary to have a quality winter coat, hat, gloves and especially warm non-slip shoes. The best time to visit is an early afternoon when the most light is out and the temperature reaches its daily peak.
