Karviná is a statutory city in the Moravian-Silesian Region on the border with Poland, in historical Cieszyn Silesia. It lies on the Olše River and is the largest town along its course. Its centre is Fryštát, a princely town founded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, with a chateau, a square and the Gothic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In 1776, hard coal was discovered near Karviná, and after 1850 the farming village of Karvín grew into the mining and industrial town of Karvinná. At the turn of 1948 and 1949, Fryštát, Karvinná, Darkov, Ráj and Staré Město merged into a single town. The original Karvinná later disappeared because of mining; what remains of it is the Leaning Church of St Peter of Alcantara. Karviná also includes Darkov Spa, founded at a spring of iodine-bromine brine. Around 50,000 people live here.
