On the Zlíchov road between Zlíchov and Little Chuchli, in the places of the now extinct village Křenkov, stands a small round chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary the Painful. Despite its small size it is a construction with an unusual history, deeply tied to the stone quarry and its past.

The beginnings of the construction dates back to 1742, when the French troops built in the quarry south of Zlíchov's money factory during the siege of Prague. After the war, the workers used space here as a warehouse of building materials. In 1847 it was converted into a chapel by a quarry owner named Herget. Tradition claims that he dedicated it to the memory of his daughter, Mary, who was a disaster at the quarry. According to another version of the chapel, Marie Herget herself - the daughter of the owner - built in memory of the workers who died in these stones.

In the early 20th century, the chapel took care of the Prague Emmauz Benefits and modified it in Beuron style. In 1903 the chapel was reconsecrated. Since the 1950s, it's been decaying. Today he is not in church property and is not subject to attempts at restitution.

It is an architectural construction on a circular plan with an apside, where right-angled risalite forms the entrance. The shield is decorated with a mosaic monogram of Christ - Alpha and Omega - with the inscription "AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA." The chapel is covered with a brick dome with no cover. The interior illuminates the segmented window under which the walled altar stands. The space is surrounded by simple brick seating.

The interior decoration from Czech painter and mosaic Victor Foerster is most valuable. On the walls and ceiling are the remains of ornamental painting with central cross and Latin text from the plaintiff's Song (1,12): "O vos omnes, qui transitis per viam, attendite et vidte, si est dolor sicut dolor meus" - "All of you who go by, behold and see what pain is like my pain." These words contain the history of the tragedy of the quarry with the spiritual sense of the place.

In August 2019, there was a brigade at the chapel during which volunteers cleaned the area and carved away the timber. The chapel remains a quiet place under the Barrando rocks, a witness of centuries when war, mining and prayer took place.

Welcome to the Chapel of Our Lady of Pain in Deep Cups. You are standing in a place that bears the traces of three centuries of history - from a war siege to a peaceful prayer house. In front of you is a small sacral building on a circular floor plan with an apsid, as if grown right from a place where there was a blast and where people later sought solace. Look at its simple but distinctive facade - it is a building that appears to be carved from local history like a stone.

Let us return to 1742, when the French troops built the money factory during the siege of Prague. It was a place of danger, full of danger of explosion, but also a symbol of war force. Back then, there was no chapel here, just a powder warehouse to protect the soldiers from the enemy. But time and human fate had a different plan.

Now pay attention to how this building has turned. At the beginning of the nineteenth century - probably in 1847 - Herget's quarry owner transformed it into a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Pain. Why? History doesn't tell us directly, but it is reported that it may have been in memory of his daughter Mary, who died tragically here, or in honor of the workers who found their last rest in the quarry. That's how it became the place of war danger instead of peace and memory.

The architecture of the chapel is modest, but harmonious. Notice its circular shape - as if it wanted to wrap the visitor and offer him a moment of peace. Apsida, on the one hand, gives the building a rhythm, as if someone designed it with the intention of making everyone who enters here feel in the right place. The interior, although not so richly decorated today, carried in the past the remnants of ornamental painting - perhaps Latin inscriptions or symbols of faith that reminded people here to seek comfort.

Now imagine what happened here in 1900. The Benediktini of Emauz, inspired by Beuron style, modified the chapel. They added a new look, a new soul, and in 1903 it was reconsecrated. Since then, it serves as a place to meet, pray and remember. But what happened to the original danger? The money store that stood here centuries ago? The answer is in the construction itself - the stone and time have become a chapel that reminds us how the places of war horror can become a place of peace.

Look around you. Do you ever hear the echo of the past? Maybe in the noise of leaves or in the press that exists here. The chapel stands in a place where two epochs met - war and peace, death and life, pain and comfort. And that's what makes it a place worth visiting.

If you have a moment, stay here a little longer. Go through the area where the quarry workers once worked, or stop by the stone to remind you that history is not only in books, but also in these places where every stone has a story. And when you leave, take the idea that even danger and tragedy can grow something beautiful.

Thank you for taking the time to explore this chapel. May her atmosphere bring you peace and inspiration. Hi!

For kids

Imagine going back to when Praha was still young and didn't know as many historical monuments as it did today. You can look at the place where the Chapel of Our Lady of Pain is now standing in Prague, 5-Deep Cups.

It was like a game when people lived there. Osada Køenkov was small and closed, but full of life and joy. Parents tried to feed their families, kids played on the street, and young people approached love. But then came the time when the settlement disappeared.
