Bohumín is a town in the Karviná District on the border with Poland, in the Czech part of historical Cieszyn Silesia. It lies at the confluence of the Oder and the Olše and is the last town on the Oder in Czechia. It began as a settlement at a ford across the Oder; its historic core is Starý Bohumín with the Gothic parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. In 1847 the Northern Railway reached the area, and next to the station, in the marshy forest of the village of Šunychl, a new settlement grew up, from 1924 the town of Nový Bohumín, with neo-Gothic red-brick buildings. Bohumín became an important railway junction. The two Bohumíns finally merged in 1973, and the surrounding villages joined a year later. Near the confluence, the Oder flows freely in meanders protected as a natural monument. Around 20,000 people live here.
