Opava je statutárním městem v Moravskoslezském kraji, známým svou historickou a kulturní bohatostí. Nachází se v Opavské pahorkatině na řece Opavě, má přibližně 55 tisíc obyvatel a je po Ostravě a Havířově největším městem regionu. Bývalo centrem Opavského knížectví a bylo hlavním městem rakouského, respektive českého Slezska s zemskými úřady. Město je domovem institucí jako Zemský archiv, Slezské zemské muzeum a Slezská univerzita. Každoročně se koná festival Bezručova Opava. Historie Opavy sahá daleko do minulosti s prvními osadami již ze starší doby kamenné. Středověké město vzniklo ve 12. století jako kupecká osada na obchodní cestě z Moravy do Polska, součásti „Jantarové stezky“.
